the 2008 top 5 albums

Yes, 2008 is coming to an end and for the next 4 weeks only the usual boring christmas or best of compilations are going to be expected. Time to summarize my personal list of this years top 5 albums. Here they are (from rank 5 to 1):

5) Kettcar - Sylt

A masterpiece of this Hamburg based band. And in contrast to Tomte's new album this year, a collection of songs with extraordinary good lyrics.

4) Sigur Ros - með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

Symphonic music, not from this earth... wonderful to listen. So peaceful and - hey - "gobbeldigook" was really a surprise... never heared a funny song from sigur ros before. The secretly known summer hit :-)

3) Gutter Twins - Saturnalia

When I listened the first time to that album, I was in love with the deep dark sound collages which are the background for the sound of Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stoneage). Most of the songs sound unready but quite fresh and your listening mind is completing the songs for you. This can be a joy in the era of artificial superstars and other not worth of mentioning casting bands.

2) Slut - Still No. 1

The album arrived in the beginning of 2008 and it was an album I waited desperately for, after the piano teaser on myspace: "wednesday"... and it was worth to wait for. It's probably not an outstanding album, but an album with so much joy, so much cravings... and excellent songs, which don't go easy into your brain. But when they arrive there after some listenings, they stay residently.

1) The Killers - Day And Age

An excellent album in the last pace of this year. An album which I didn't expected to arrive and which I didn't expected to sound like this. "Human" is one of the best songs I've heared after a long time, and as I wrote in another blog: an endorphines overdose! I love the Killers for being so pathetic and open minded. An antagonism? Not with the Killers!

Well, there were a lot of other albums this year, most of them also good, but hey, not good enough to slip into my top 5 list ;-)

albums which I have more than positive in my mind:
  • Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling
  • Girls From Hawai - Plan Your Escape
  • Get Well Soon - Get Well Soon
  • Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs
  • Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst
  • Bloc Party - Intimacy
  • Ben Folds - Way To Normal
I was a bit disappointed by the Albert Hammond Jr. Album "Como Te Llama?" and I was totally shocked about the new album of Rilo Kiley "Take Offs And Landings". So boring and absolutely not comparable to the other great albums of them.

I'm sure, I forgot some of the good albums in 2008 right now, when I wrote this here... I'm curious to know from you, what I have forgotten... so please comment :-)
